The following steps explain how to set up printers for
individual workstations. For systems that are part of a network, you must define
print destinations for each workstation. If this is a stand-alone workstation,
you should define the print destinations for workstation #1 only. To set up each
workstation to specific print destinations, follow these steps:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
the printer must be able to
accommodate a 0" margin setting. If
you have a Laser or Inkjet printer, it has to be HP PCL compatible and must also
have DOS character/text printing capability.
Go to Menu 41 - Utilities, Item 5 - Define Workstation Printers.
Press F2 to show the record for the desired workstation, or press F4 to add
a record for the desired workstation. Workstation numbers are displayed when
you sign onto the system, or you can press the ALT + O keys to view the
workstation # you are currently working from.

The following text explains the fields on this screen:
 | Vld: Indicates if the connection is valid. Type (Y)es for the
valid connections. |
 | Phy Conn: Press F6 to select the type of physical connection
each printer is using.
(See your network administrator or PC specialist for this information). |
 | FF B4: Type (Y)es or (N)o to indicate if you want
the computer to space down to a new page before printing. |
 | FF AFT: Type (Y)es or (N)o to indicate if you want the
computer to space down to a new page after printing. For most laser and other sheet-fed printers, type (Y)es. |
 | Defn#: Press F5 or F6 and the ¯
arrows to scroll through the printers currently defined. If you can’t find a
specific printer, go into Define Printer Codes and add the
necessary printer information as defined in the documentation for your
printer.
 | Most printers can be set to emulate either
Epson or HP printers, so try those types if your printer is not
defined. |
|
Some typical settings:
Console display: 1. y 2. cons 3. n 4. n 5. 4 Workstation
Console
 | This allows the workstation to print reports to the PC monitor. |
Local printer: 6. y 7. lpt1 8. n 9. y 10. 1 HP LaserJet Portrait
(e.g..)
 | This allows the workstation to print to the LPT1 port. |
 | This is usually a printer physically connected to the workstation and the printer is
not designated as a network printer. |
 | If there is no local printer attached to this workstation, this
is usually a captured network printer. |
Disk file: 11. y 12. file 13. n 14. n 15. 5 Disk File, 66 lpp
 | This allows the workstation to print to an ASCII text file. ASCII
files can be imported to other computer programs on your computer, such as a
word document or spreadsheet program. |
Spool to DOS: 16. y 17. lspl 18. n 19. n 20. 1 HP LaserJet Portrait
(e.g..)
 |
If you are using pure DOS workstations and want to use
the DOS Print command for background printing, use this setting. |
Netware queue 1: 21. y 22. queue 23. n 24. n 25. 1 HP LaserJet
Portrait
 | If you are on a Novell network, and want to print directly to the Netware
queue instead of to a captured printer, use this setting. |
 | Press F8 - More - Display Network Queues for a list of your
network printers. |
Other printer 1: 46. y 47. com2 48. n 49. n 50. 8 Okidata
Model 24 (e.g..)
 | This would print to a serial printer attached to serial port 2. |
Other printer 2: 51. y 52. lpt2 53. n 54. n 55. 8 Epson or
compatible (e.g..)
 | This would print to a parallel printer attached to parallel port 2. |
Windows 95 Printer Settings
Click Start->Settings->Printers to access the printer setup icons.
Right click on the desired printer, select properties and then select the
Capture Settings tab. Capture the printer to the desired port as defined above
under physical connection.
Troubleshooting Printers
If the printer will not print at all:
-
Ensure the PC is connected to a printer - either a local
printer or to a printer on the network.
- Check the cable connection between the PC or server or network and the
printer
- Make sure the printer is turned on and will perform a self-test.
- Make sure the printer will print from Windows. (e.g.. Print Test Page from
properties).
- Make sure the printer will print from DOS. (e.g.. type: dir c:\ > prn).
- Make sure the printer is set up correctly in Summit Utilities. (see
above).
If the page formatting is wrong:
 | Try turning the printer power off, wait a minute, turn back on. Reset the
top-of-form if a tractor fed printer. |
 | If the horizontal spacing is wrong (lines wrap, wrong font size, etc.),
make sure you have the correct printer defined in Summit Utilities. |
 | If the vertical spacing is wrong, make sure the correct page size is
defined on the report or form you're printing. |
 | If spurious form feeds are occurring, check the field printed last on the
correct form - there is usually a bogus non-print character embedded in the
text. Go to that field (e.g.. name in Advertiser Data Entry) and retype that
field. |
